Round-the-clock ventilation for a progressive neurological condition

AE, 39, has Duchenne muscular dystrophy with severe muscle weakness and respiratory compromise. This is how we built safe, round-the-clock ventilatory care around him at home, when his previous provider could not.

Case Introduction

A progressive neuromuscular disorder
AE has a confirmed diagnosis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a progressive neuromuscular disorder characterised by severe muscle weakness and respiratory compromise. Over time he became reliant on complex care: continuous ventilatory support, percutaneous enteral (PEG) feeding, airway clearance assistance and vigilant pressure-ulcer prevention.

His previous care arrangements proved insufficient to manage escalating weekend needs and clinical complexity.

“Providing consistent, high-quality care is what we’re here for, tailored to each person, every day.”

The Challenge

What AE’s care required

His needs were high-acuity and round-the-clock:

  • Nocturnal bilevel ventilation and intermittent non-invasive ventilation by day
  • Assisted cough techniques to maintain airway patency
  • Nutrition and hydration managed via a PEG feeding tube
  • Chronic sinus tracts (following spinal surgery) needing daily sterilisation and dressing
  • Strict repositioning regimes for a persistent pressure-injury risk
  • Weekend and full-week clinical support his previous provider could not reliably deliver
