Case Introduction

A complete spinal cord injury

Service user D is a 57-year-old man who sustained a severe spinal cord injury at the C4/5 vertebrae after falling from a ladder while working as a window cleaner. The injury resulted in complete tetraplegia, and he is now fully dependent on others for all aspects of daily life and clinical care.

As his support needs grew more complex, NL Group was asked to take over his care package in 2021, and now delivers 24/7 care.

“Providing 24-hour care for someone with such complex needs is a responsibility we don’t take lightly. Our goal is always to deliver consistent, expert support that empowers the individual to live life on their terms.” — NL Group Team Lead

The Challenge

What Service user D’s care required

His needs were high-acuity and continuous:

  • A tracheostomy and continuous ventilator support — he can breathe independently for only a few minutes
  • Frequent muscle spasms and a risk of aspiration pneumonia, needing careful respiratory management including oxygen therapy and cough assist
  • PEG feeding overnight, alongside the oral intake he enjoys during the day
  • Full assistance with hygiene, including hoisting to and from a shower chair, and cleaning of his tracheostomy, PEG and stoma
  • Support with all aspects of daily life, including social interaction and activities inside and outside the home
